The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure is a dark ride at Disney's California Adventure that opened on June 3, 2011. It is based on the Little Mermaid classic. The attraction recently opened under the name Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid as part of Magic Kingdom's 2012 New Fantasyland expansion.
A dark ride about the 1989 Disney blockbuster was supposed to open in Japan and Paris in the 90's. Early Hong Kong ideas were planned for this future attraction. The ride idea was scrapped, and the 2006 Little Mermaid DVD release included a visual of it on a special features disc.
A different version of the attraction opened June 3, 2011 at Disney's California Adventure, as part of the billion dollar expansion and replacing Golden Dreams narrated by Whoopi Goldberg.
The Golden Dreams queue has been replaced with a 20th century aquarium type ride queue with tiling, trees, mosaics on the floor of sea creatures, and others. As soon as you enter the main building, a mural of Ariel is on the back wall behind the seashells and the loading dock. From that point on, you board the attraction.
The ride starts when your seashell goes under Eric's shipwreck, into a room where Scuttle is playing the accordion, telling a little bit about Ariel's life. Then, the ride makes you feel like your going underwater with water effects rising and cold rushing winds about a second long.
An underwater passage opens up to reveal Ariel singing "Part of That World" in her trove with Flounder. The ride then goes through the lagoon where Sebastian tells Ariel life is better "Under the Sea", while the famous score plays. Fish are dancing, playing instruments, and even forming conga lines.
The ride goes to Ursula's home, with Flotsam and Jetsam warning you. Ursula is singing the score "Poor Unfortunate Souls" while she looks through her crystal ball, watching Ariel.
Your clamshell goes to the room when Ariel kisses Eric hidden behind the lagoon in the boat. Fish spout up water as Sebastian sings "Kiss the Girl", while Ariel and Eric get close enough to kiss eachother. Eric goes back hesitantly, upsetting Ariel.
Clamshells go through the last room, Ariel's wedding room, where a portrait of Ursula's death is taking place in the ocean, while Ariel kisses Eric while her voice vocalizes in the background. The orb holding her voice forms a heart around the shadow of Ariel and Eric, while all the fish and King Triton celebrate in the background. The last scene is when Scuttle is still playing the accordion, telling the last of the story.
Few of the audio animatronics include voice casting.
