Journey to the Center of the Earth

Journey to the Center of the Earth is a thrilling, high-speed, slot car attraction at Tokyo DisneySea. The attraction is similar to Test Track at Epcot and Radiator Springs Racers at California Adventure. The ride is also based off of Jules Verne's novel, Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Ride history[]

Originally, Journey to the Center of the Earth was planned to a freefall ride, like The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. It was going to be part of Discovery Mountain, a Disneyland Paris concept that was in place of Space Mountain. It was never built, so the project reemerged into Tokyo DisneySea's opening day attraction lineup.

Ride synopsis[]

Mount Prometheus, the volcano on Mysterious Island, has become the base for Captain Nemo. After walking through its mysterious caverns (queue), guests board their Terravator vehicles to the facility's base station half a mile below them. In the base station is a communication center that can give warnings of the volcano's activity, but the man controlling the center is away on a tea break. Riders then board steam-powered mine vehicles that can drill through Earth's center. The vehicle enters a cave that is full of colorful crystals, before entering a Mushroom Forest, which is inhabited by insect and amphibian-like forms. Before the car moves forward, an earthquake causes a cave-in in the tunnel ahead, forcing the car onto another route with giant egg-like sacks. The car then reaches the shore of the Subterranean Sea and is almost struck by lightning by electrified gas clouds. The finale comes, and riders are forced into the volcanic center of Mount Prometheus, where riders go face-to-face with the lava monster that calls the Center of the Earth its home, before escaping back to the surface on the eruption wave.
