Goofy is a cartoon character created in 1932 at Walt Disney Productions. Goofy is a tall, anthropomorphic dog who is the father of Max Goof and a close friend of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. He is normally characterized as extremely clumsy and having little intelligence, yet this interpretation isn't always definitive; occasionally Goofy is shown as intuitive and clever, albeit in his own unique, eccentric way. Originally named Dippy Dawg, he debuted in the 1932 cartoon Mickey's Revue. During the 1930s he was used extensively as part of a comedy trio with Mickey and Donald and was eventually given his own series in 1939. Even after his theatrical short series ended in 1961, he continued to star in other projects, such as the 1992 television series Goof Troop and its 1995 theatrical film, A Goofy Movie.

In the parks, he is either alone or paired with either his son Max Goof or his girlfriend Clarabelle Cow. He is voiced by bill farmer

History[]

Background[]

Origins[]

Goofy was a toon character, presumably made around the 1930s. Goofy appeared in many movies and shorts including in "Galaxy of the Stars", "The Sweethearts of Swing" as Sid Cahuenga, and "The Bride of Frankenollie".

Goofy and an unidentified partner had a son named Max (possibly around the 1950s or 1970s).[1] By the 1990s, Goofy's wife died leaving him to raise Max alone, largely from his house in Toontown. Since then, Goofy has often been shown to be in a relationship with toon cow, Clarabelle Cow.

Sky School[]

By around 1935, Goofy went to the, "Fly by Night" flight school and completed enough of the requisite courses to become a flight instructor.[2][3] Paradise Pier owner Gustav Tinkershmidt let Goofy use a portion of the Pier as a, "Flight salvage yard" to reclaim, repair and store damaged and unused aeroplane parts. Goofy went on to use this portion of the pier as his destructive, "Sky School" similar to his role in the 1940 cartoon, "Goofy's Glider", as well as to make egg deliveries for the company S.H.E.L.L.. The sky school was however infamous for teaching reckless and negligent flying with a high number of crashes, while also buying cheap and sometimes explosive fuel (when not using rubber-bands to power their propellers).

One graduate of the school was Len Dingeer, who Goofy was surprised to hear had landed his plane and not crashed. Len asked Goofy to recommend him to Paradise Airlines, only for Goofy's recommendation to be lacking. Another graduate was Buster the Crop Duster who ran a crop dusting business on Route 13 outside of Paradise Pier where he offered to hire other graduates of the school. Graduate, "Fly Boy" Roy Williams was left looking for freelance flying work.

By around 1935, Goofy was a participant in the 4th annual, "Border to Boardwalk" air race at the pier but altered his participation award to say that he was the winner. At some point, Goofy was given a notice to appear by the beach patrol officer George Geef, as Goofy was flying upside-down over the pier. Goofy and/or his students also damaged a billboard belonging to Kinney Outdoor Advertising, which Goofy was then billed for. Goofy also made a business of, "Romance at Night Midnight Flights" over the pier which flew the couples Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Donald & Daisy Duck, and Don Tomas & Rita Margarita (the latter of whom did not want their names posted in advertisements, but Goofy did anyways).

1940s[]

At some point in the 1940s, Goofy was accused of being a spy but was cleared by detectives Eddie and Teddy Valiant.[4]

Around 1947-1948, Goofy did a warm-up performance at the Ink & Paint Club.

Candy Company[]

Goofy received a, "Masters of Candy Science" from the University of Candy Science. Goofy's masters certificate was signed by Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney.[5] Goofy went on to run his candy company from the 1930s style marketplace neighbourhood of the town of Disney Springs, Florida.
